30x40” Black and White Giclée print

Passive is a departure - It takes the notion of bringing the personal to the external. The idea of the project was to grow this unacceptably grotesque facial hair for nearly a year without shaving. The departure point of the project started when I had been constantly bombarded with slurs and insults from close friends, family and colleagues alike regarding the structure of my facial hair. These slurs range from a number of referenced connotations such as masculine/effeminate nature in men, societal standards of the male norm, cultural and racial degradation and other negativity. I created the piece to absorb and re-appropriate a negative experience into a visual and therapeutic experience for myself. The personal journal entries are appropriated right onto the surface of the large format print in order to reflect a nature of fragility and passivity.

Gabriela Hansen at the Island, 2012
a few colleagues and I took the ferry to my professors’ house on the island, and we had a nice bonfire potluck dinner along the beach facing towards the north side of Toronto (viewing from the south). We were there to celebrate the arrival of two students and their professor from NID in Ahmedabad, India. We had the opportunity to bring them in by means of a grant in order to work on a two week intensive workshop in relation to sustainability and INTAC.
this photograph was taken with a 6x9 folding rangefinder, and it’s really a hit or miss when it comes to sharpness and focus. This one came out the best out of two rolls, and the colour is magnificent.

i’m headed to do 9 20x24 colour darkroom prints today as a part of my final project from last semester. Although this is not one of them I’m stoked to finish it up today as I’ve a shit ton of work to do still for the other classes that I missed while I was out.
